No longer can a few producers wield enormous influence in the elections of the powerful Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC). In a dramatic move on Saturday, a special general body meeting of the KFCC amended the bylaws and created the ‘one man one vote’ rule.

Earlier, a producer could cast as many votes as the number of banners in his name. He could also register as many banners as the number of films he had produced till date. So the likes of the Rajkumar family (38 votes), N Kumar (17) and Chinne Gowda (18) determined the outcome of each election.

The amendment was approved on Saturday after a tense discussion. In fact, a bylaw review committee had made this change two months ago, along with a host of others. Producer Umesh Banakar, who was in the bylaw review panel, said, “A handful of members with multiple votes were enjoying huge clout. We wanted to democratise the KFCC setup. ‘One man one vote’ is an agreed natural principle everywhere.”

Despite the overt show of unanimous opinion, the amendment is seen as a move to curtail the power of Sandalwood’s ‘big boys’. The biggest loser will be the Rajkumar family which along with producer SA Govindaraju had 38 votes across three sectors (producers, distributors, exhibitors). Other producers with a huge number of votes include N Kumar (17), Kannada Somu (19), Jai Jagadish (13), K C N Chandrashekar (18) and Rockline Venkatesh (9).

A producer who attended the meeting on Saturday said, “Four people determining the fate of all contestants cannot be called democracy. We have finally become a more democratic setup.” Henceforth, an individual can exercise a maximum of three votes, that too if he is a member of all three sectors. The new amendments will come into play in the next KFCC elections, scheduled in August.

An amendment to stop office-bearers from not contesting in elections for two years, was opposed. A proposal to allow only office bearers to contest for the president’s post was also shot down after a long and heated debate.
