Shooting senseless,evil,says Obama

Fort Myers (Florida): US President Barack Obama cut short a re-election campaign trip to Florida on Friday following a mass shooting at a Batman movie that he branded as senseless and evil.

Obama told a somber crowd at a campaign rally in Fort Myers that the shooting in the Colorado town of Aurora which left at least 12 people dead reminds us of all the ways that we are united as one American family.Such violence, such evil,is senseless. But while we will never know fully what causes somebody to take the life of another,we do know what makes life worth living, Obama said. The people we lost in Aurora loved and they were loved, he said.

Obama, who cancelled a planned election campaign stop in Orlando to return to Washington, earlier released a statement saying he and his wife,Michelle, were shocked and saddened by the slayings. My administration will do everything that we can to support the people of Aurora in this extraordinarily difficult time, he said.
We are committed to bringing whoever was responsible to justice, ensuring the safety of our people, and caring for those who have been wounded, President Obama added.AFP

Cinema hall shooting: US police trying to establish motive
Published: Saturday, July 21, 2012, 17:45 [IST]
Updated: Saturday, July 21, 2012, 18:17 [IST]

US cops clueless about gunman's motive

Washington, Jul 21: US police today struggled to establish motive behind the deadly shooting spree at a cinema hall and explored ways to collect possible evidence from the suspect's "booby-trapped" house, as President Barack Obama vowed to bring to justice whoever was behind the "evil" act.

A day after the shooting, which claimed 12 lives and left 58 people injured, it remained unclear what was the motive of the gunman, identified as 24-year-old James Holmes, to fire indiscriminately at the moviegoers during the premiere of the latest Batman film 'The Dark Knight Rises' in Aurora, a suburb of Denver, Colorado.

As police began the process of notifying the families of those killed, authorities grappled with how to collect possible evidence from Holmes' apartment that was allegedly booby-trapped by him before leaving for the theatre.

Police evacuated hundreds of residents from five apartment buildings, including the one where Holmes lived, after he told them he had rigged his one-bedroom apartment with explosives.

"It is a very vexing problem how to enter that apartment safely. I personally have never seen anything like what the pictures show us is in there," city police chief Dan Oates was quoted by CNN as saying.

A vigil was organised to mourn the death of innocent victims as hundreds held candles, many sobbing and hugging each other in an outpouring of grief.

Ten people were killed inside the theatre while two others died at hospitals. By last night, the bodies were removed from the theatre and authorities started "the agonising process" of notifying families, Oates said.

Of those injured, "nearly everyone was shot," with only a handful of people hurt in the resulting chaos, Oates said.

Describing the shooting as an "evil" act which was "beyond reason," President Obama today said his government "stands ready to do everything necessary to bring whoever's responsible for this heinous crime to justice."

Dark night at Denver: 12 shot during Batman film Empty US shooting: Suspect silent, dazed in 1st hearing

Post by Admin Tue Jul 24, 2012 12:22 pm

Centennial (US), Jul 23: A former doctoral student accused of a deadly shooting rampage at a midnight showing of the new Batman movie in Colorado appeared in court for the first time, but he didn't seem to be there at all.

Unshaven and appearing dazed, James Holmes sat virtually motionless, his brown hair dyed a shocking shade of orange. It was the world's first glimpse of the 24-year-old since Friday's shooting left 12 dead and 58 injured in one of the worst mass shootings in US history. Holmes didn't say a word. Prosecutors said later they didn't know if Holmes was on medication.

Authorities have said he is being held in isolation. His demeanour appeared to anger the relatives of some of the victims who attended the hearing and stared at him the entire time. Holmes, whom police say was clad in body armour and armed with an assault rifle, a shotgun and handguns during the attack, was refusing to cooperate in the investigation, authorities said. They said it could take months to learn what prompted the attack.

Holmes is expected to be formally charged next Monday. He is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder and he could face additional counts of aggravated assault and weapons violations. Prosecutor Carol Chambers said her office is considering pursuing the death penalty against Holmes. She said a decision will be made in consultation with victims' families.

Relatives of the shooting victims leaned forward in their seats to catch their first glimpse of him. Two women held hands tightly, one shaking her head. David Sanchez, who waited outside the courthouse during the hearing, said his pregnant daughter escaped uninjured but her husband was shot in the head and was in critical condition.

Asked what punishment Holmes should get if convicted, Sanchez said, "I think death is." His daughter was delivering her baby on Monday.
